Fifty years of training 4-H volunteers to help 4-H youth realize their potential, 50 years of hosting retreats and conferences for many types of organizations, 50 years of serving as a learning center for natural resources – all will be commemorated during Kettunen Center's anniversary celebration, Saturday, Aug. 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on the center's 160-acre facility near Tustin, Mich. The facility is owned and operated by the Michigan 4-H Foundation and is a 20-minute drive south of Cadillac.
The day will begin with a 5K trail run/walk through the center's scenic trail system. There will be eight age brackets with medals going to the first, second and third place male and female runners in each age group. For participants who pre-register by August 10, the entry fee is $15. The fee for race-day registration is $20. All proceeds support youth programs at the center. To register, call 231-829-3421.
Throughout the day, 4-H'ers from across the state will showcase farm animals and will have information on hand about different 4-H projects. Other celebration activities at the center include fishing clinics, archery lessons, kayaking, canoeing, pontoon boat rides and swimming in Center Lake, disc-golf competitions, GPS treasure hunts and interpretive nature hikes. The festivities include an outdoor barbecue picnic lunch.
The 1961 Camp Kett dedication time capsule will be on display, and there will be tours of the buildings and a video presentation that will tell the story of Kettunen Center's first 50 years. Russell Mawby, former CEO and chairman of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation and a lifelong supporter of 4-H and Kettunen Center, was present at the Camp Kett cornerstone laying in 1961 and will take part in the burial of the 2011 time capsule.
Please register online at www.kettunencenter.org/kett50.html. For those who RSVP by August 12, the fee is $7 for adults, $5 for youth aged 5 to 17, and $25 for an immediate family group. The adult fee on the day of the event is $10 (all other prices remain the same). Children 4 and under may attend for free. Lodging at Kettunen Center is available for an additional fee.
