The 22nd Annual Michigan Beef Expo gave cattle producers an opportunity to showcase some of the best seedstock genetics available. This year's special event included eight breed shows and sales, youth contests, an extensive indoor trade show and a junior steer and heifer show.
Approximately 83 consignors exhibited 160 head of cattle from Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The Expo Supreme Champion Bull was awarded to the Angus Champion Bull consigned by Seldom Rest Farms, from Niles, MI. He was the high selling bull and sold for $6,600 to Douglas Stork of Clare, MI. The Supreme Champion Heifer was the Chianina female consigned by DeLong Cattle from Cass City, MI. She sold for $3,500 to Lois Toth of St. Louis, MI. The high selling female overall was a Maine heifer consigned by Cory and Tracy Dahms. She sold for $4,600 to Brittany Fisher, LaPorte, IN.
The Beef Expo, a project of the Michigan Cattlemen's Association, is designed to promote the beef industry through sales, shows and displays of seedstock genetics, focus media attention on the beef industry, unite the various breeds and provide an opportunity to share in a major statewide beef industry promotional event.
Angus – Fitzner Farms from Wolverine, MI had the Champion Angus Female and the Champion Bull was awarded to Seldom Rest Farms, Niles, MI.
Beefalo - The Champion Beefalo Female was consigned by Richard Kropf, Belding, MI and the Champion Bull award was presented to Mark and Sue Guigar, Carsonville, MI.
Chianina – DeLong Cattle, Cass City, MI had the Champion Female and 3G Ranch, Kendallville, IN had the Champion Bull.
Hereford - The Champion Female was consigned by McDonald Farm, Byron Center, MI and Laudeman Farms of Bremen, IN exhibited the Champion Bull.
Limousin - The Champion Limousin Female was exhibited by R.O. Limousin, Hudson, MI and the Champion Limousin Bull was shown by Sugarbush Limousin, Allen, MI.
Maine-Anjou – Cory and Tracy Dahms, Portland, MI consigned the Champion Female and Kasperski Farms, Rile, MI had the Champion Bull.
Shorthorn – The Champion Shorthorn Female was exhibited by Don Gardner, Dexter, MI and the Champion Shorthorn Bull was shown by Rod Schoon, Kendallville, IN. AJShowCattle/Ropp Farms, Concord, MI exhibited both the Grand and Reserve Shorthorn Plus Heifers
Simmental - Chris Harrington, Paris, MI had the Champion Female and Campbell Farms, St. Johns, MI was awarded the Champion Bull banner.
One-hundred-sixty cattle lots totaled $326,725. The females averaged $1,897 on 100 lots and 60 bulls averaged $2,284. In addition, thirty-eight embryos grossed $13,575.
